Tom Waits' title track is the album's moody centerpiece while obscure gems from Bob Dylan and Dr. John shine through the cloudy atmosphere. Here she reinvents herself with a staggering, bruised rendition of her 1960s mega-hit "As Tears Go By".
And when she breaks into the well-worn "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" she does so with the dark assurance of someone name-dropping a former address.
